Houthis launch missiles at Yemen’s Aden airport as fighting intensifies

Two missiles launched by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi forces targeted the international airport in the southern port city of Aden early Wednesday, according to Aden’s security department. No casualties were immediately reported.

The attack comes as fighting has intensified across Yemen following recent Houthi advances along the country’s Red Sea coast. Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have launched a counteroffensive with support from the Saudi-led coalition, recapturing areas near the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Aden International Airport is the main international gateway for parts of Yemen that remain outside Houthi control. The latest missile attack has raised concerns over the safety of air travel as fighting spreads across several fronts.

The Saudi-led coalition also said on Wednesday that it had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile launched toward Khamis Mushait in southern Saudi Arabia. According to Saudi state television, the coalition said the missile threats originated from Houthi-controlled areas, including Sanaa, Saada and Amran.

The Houthis have also claimed attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with drones, while also reporting attacks on Abha International Airport and a military base near Khamis Mushait. Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed those claims.

The latest escalation follows weeks of renewed fighting along Yemen’s Red Sea coast. Saudi-backed forces have been pushing to regain territory captured by the Houthis, including areas around Bab al-Mandab and the city of Mocha.

The developments have also added to concerns about regional security and international trade, as Bab al-Mandab is one of the world’s key maritime routes connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

Meanwhile, Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV reported that Saudi forces had carried out a strike in areas covering the central governorates of Ibb and Taiz. There was no immediate confirmation of the reported strike from the Saudi-led coalition.

The continued exchange of missile and drone attacks marks another sharp escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict, with fighting now extending across both Yemen and neighboring Saudi Arabia.
